Gwen Stefani was born in Fullerton, California, on October 3rd, 1969. Gwen first caught everyone’s attention back in the 80s as the lead singer of a band called No Doubt.
The band first got together in 1986, and they played until 2004 when they all decided to take a break. That same year of their break, Gwen recorded her very first solo album called Love. Angel. Music. Baby.
It didn’t take long for the world to realize that Gwen is a powerhouse of an artist all on her own, and Gwen just carved out more and more success for herself as the years went on.
You have probably most recently seen Gwen on TV as a coach on NBC’s hit show The Voice, which certainly helped to solidify the fact that Gwen is just a household name these days.
Although you certainly know her name, here are 5 things I bet you never knew about Gwen Stefani, plus some very cool photos of her from the beginning of her career!

Let’s see how many things you know about Gwen Stefani!
1. Gwen got her name in an unusual way. Her mom and dad chose to name her after a stewardess in a book called Airport, written by Arthur Hailey in 1968.
2. You know how Gwen always sports red lipstick? She started doing that after her grandma bought her red lipstick back in high school.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, she shared that once she put it on, that was it. It became part of her iconic look.
“It was like I’d unlocked the key. I remember feeling like, ‘I have arrived. This is me. Finally,” she said.
“I remember sitting in my ghetto, beat-up Honda Prelude and putting on that lipstick in the rearview mirror and being like, ‘Uh-huh, I like that. That’s the sh*t right there.’ I never stopped after that.”

Her favorite makeup artist Gregory Arlt even revealed to The Hollywood Reporter what her favorite lipstick shades are.
“We stick to the classics: Russian Red, Ruby Woo, MAC Red. Cherry lip pencil is our favorite,” Gregory said.
As for orange though? That’s one shade they’re not really up for trying, even though they are trying to expand a little to more pink-looking shades!
